Two
Bars Seven Ranch Kids Camp
Kids are meant to be cowpokes -- especially
right after a whole year at school! So, the first week in June is
³Kids Camp at the Ranch². It is a time when many of our
Buckaroos are under four foot tall or have braces on their teeth.
It's a week of working on horsemanship skills and jumping-in-the-lake
skills. We add a few table manners for good measure.
The kids learn about feeding and caring for the animals with hands-on
daily chores and horse care lessons. Twice a day we have riding
lessons in the coral and then an hour-long fun ride out in the
countryside. Our horses are very accustomed to all levels of riders,
and we see to it that all are well suited for each level of rider.
Every young rider stays within his or her competence level for
safety. We have a wrangler for every five buckaroos and a couple
of fishing poles too. Toward the end of the week, when everybody
has passed their skills tests, we go find some cows to move, and
do a little overnight pack-trip with our horses. We get out the
tents and make a campfire, cook the fish we just caught, tell
ghosts stories and have pillow fights.
The days go by so fast that the kids keep a journal. After dinner
we may take our journals out to the meadow where the frogs are
croaking and write for a while and watch each other try to catch
frogs. It will be one of the best times of their lives. Many of
our ranch camp kids have remained life long friends with each
other and have become attached to the ranch, marrying here or
having family reunions here.
Some how the time between ³Little Buckaroos²
to ³Big Daddy Hood² happens without notice. That one
week at our ranch camp has been a defining moment in the lives
of many of our young cowpokes.
